During the COVID-19 crisis, the Pasadena Senior Center offers many free online activities via Zoom for adults 50 and older until mandates for isolation and social distancing have been lifted.

Virtual Class Tasting – Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As the registration period for nearly 30 fee-based winter classes approaches, anyone can choose from more than a dozen of the most popular offerings – from Acting Virtually to Zumba Gold – by attending half-hour “class tastings” for free, meeting the instructors and learning more about the courses. Breathing Better with Asthma and COPD – Thursday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m. Asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are lung diseases that cause swelling in airways and make it difficult to breathe. A Zoom Refresher – Thursday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. Older adults have been embracing the Zoom videoconferencing platform as much as anybody else for social interaction, work, education and more during the COVID-19 pandemic. Join Pete Matus, the Pasadena Senior Center’s Zoom czar (AKA the online classes and events coordinator), Events Director Annie Laskey and board of directors member Lynn Mehl as they share tips for using Zoom and answer questions about how to join a Zoom session, the importance of strong Internet connectivity and more. Food Distribution Program – Friday, Jan. 8, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monthly food distribution ordinarily takes place the first Friday of every month. Due to the holidays, it has been scheduled for Jan. 8. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one box of food and couples receive two. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Masks and social distancing are required. Alzheimer’s Savvy Caregivers Support Group – Friday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. The realities of providing caregiver services to a family member or other person with Alzheimer’s disease can be overwhelming to anyone who does not have much experience. Ask Pasadena Senior Games Athletes: Track and Field – Monday, Jan. 11, at 4 p.m. The monthly Cynthia Rosedale Memorial Sports Talk Series will kick off with this panel discussion among Pasadena Senior Games track and field athletes, followed by a Q&A with the audience. Each month, Pasadena Senior Games athletes from a variety of disciplines will discuss how to stay mentally and physically fit in sports and in life. Diabetes Support Group – Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. This support group can be a vital part of diabetes management. If you or a loved one is living with the challenges of diabetes, come learn about others’ experiences, share your own stories and learn how to cope with this disease. The Diabetes Support Group meets the second Wednesday of every month. Reverse Mortgages – Thursday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m. Equity is the difference between what you owe on your mortgage and what your home is currently worth. A traditional mortgage is one in which a homeowner makes payments to a lender; with a reverse mortgage, the lender pays the homeowner, who relinquishes equity.
