Joseph Marcell was born in Saint Lucia, a Commonwealth of Britain, located in the Caribbean. When he was nine years old, his family moved to England. As part of his school curriculum he learned about Shakespeare and Chaucer among others. After completing his schooling, he took training to become an electrical engineer. Marcell shared that when he was 18 years old he saw a performance by a "Negro Ensemble" at the World Theatre in London. This was his introduction to a new Black world which led him to "his road to Damascus." He realized that he wanted to be an actor. He attended the Central School of Speech and Drama in London where he learned the ropes and earned a diploma. Marcell described himself, at that time, as an inexperienced actor.

The Allendale Branch Library continues its "Collectors in Conversation" series with "Monomaniac LA," a series of short videos directed by Joris Debeij which focuses on three unique Los Angeles-based historical collections and the collectors behind them, on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at 1130 S.
