Grammy's Place Coffee
Shop & Gifts
In HOPKINS' VILLAGE
1547 N. Lake Avenue (corner Lake & Howard)
Pasadena, California 91104
Hours: Tues-Sat 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The all-new Grammys
Place Coffee Shop & Gifts reopened in 2004. Grammy’s Coffee Shop is a new addition to Hopkins
Village providing coffee, tea, pastries, fruit and sandwiches. Set in the unique and whimsical garden-like atmosphere
of HOPKINS
VILLAGE, located at 1547
Lake Ave., with hints of being Pasadena’s
only Afrocentric themed village, complete with life-size fiberglass African animals: the village giraffe, elephant and camel. Also, see on the patio, the rhinoceros, a black and white pig,
standing near the resident fireman, the cowboy, the “singing” couple, and of course there is The Bob (Big Boy
- in living color). Children love the chow-chow train.
A covered patio provides patrons a unique opportunity to sit in a waterfall, garden
setting reminiscent of the popular style of the New Orleans
coffee House called “Café Du Monde.” Though we may not have beignets (yet), you can get your Croissant and special
blend of Howling Monk coffee or tea, cappuccino or smoothie, to go or to enjoy in a serene patio with a friend and a game
of checkers or a good book which you can check out at each visit.
Grammys Place Gifts has a bookshelf containing the latest
African American newspapers from Dallas, TX, Riverside, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Los Angeles, CA and Portland, OR, Washington, DC,
and other points across the continent, for your reading pleasure.
Stop by for a refreshing break after your morning jog, or drop by after a hectic
afternoon of shopping or work. Bring the family for something sweet and refreshing,
or bring your sweetheart and sit in the romantic Gazebo and enjoy a quiet moment with the sounds of recorded Jazz and Blues.
Grammy’s Coffee Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Grammy’s Place Gifts offers Black art and a variety of afrocentric gifts. You may browse in our Book corner where you will discover new heroes and Black historical
figures or our featured CD’s by local performing artists including Varetta Heidleberg, Ron Brown, Cheryl Conley, and
Brother Yusef, aka the Fatback Bluesman. Also featured are handmade gifts by
local craftspeople, Mahogany greeting cards and a limited supply of organizational items such as for AKA’s, Delta’s
and The Red Hat Society.
Grammy’s Gift Shop has intimate seating inside
to enjoy a refreshing snack, sandwich or hot link. There is free parking in the parking lot.
Originally opened in 1999 at 1541 North Lake, Grammy’ Place took a hiatus,
from 2001 until 2004, when it re-opened in its new location on North Lake Avenue, with a patio/dining/social gathering area
and space for parties and meetings amidst the whimsical collection of animals
and statuettes.

The inspiration for Hopkins Village and Grammys Place comes from travels where the owners, Joe and Ruth Hopkins, saw
theme villages in the U.S., West Africa, London,
Paris and Italy. Their hope is that your visit will inspire you to come back and bring friends and
family, have lunch or a snack, and do some shopping. Although Hopkins Village may not be as big as what you
may have seen in other locations, we feel, however, we can be just as much enjoyment.
You are invited to come and share a moment with us at our “Special
Days at Grammy’s” such as at the Trunk Shows, book signings and teas held at various times of
the year. These shows provide an opportunity for crafts people to showcase, market
and sell their wares. Those who would like
to have a Trunk Show at Grammy’s Place may call 626-797-3143, for more information.
