Pasadena Board of Education President Discusses Public School Issues on "City Beat"

Topics on the latest edition of "City Beat," replaying on 55 KPAS and the Internet, include the reinvention of John Muir High School, a recent Pasadena Board of Education decision to let voters decide on a $350 million bond issue in November, and uniform grade configurations for all schools in Pasadena Unified School District.

Moderator Barry Gordon is joined by Board of Education President Tom Selinske, Pasadena Weekly reporter André Coleman and Pasadena Star-News editor Larry Wilson.

Hamlet The Taming of the Shrew

A Noise Within, California’s Classical Theatre Company based in Glendale, announces scholarship tickets to school groups for the 2008-2009 seasons’ productions of Hamlet and The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare.

These productions are part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, a national theatre initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest, which allows students specifically from underserved school districts to attend classical theatre productions at no cost, to receive free study guides and in-school workshops, and to benefit from bussing reimbursement.

A Noise Within’s 2008-2009 Shakespeare for a New Generation scholarships are available exclusively for public and charter schools within the Pasadena Unified School District.

Thursday, July 24, 7:30 pm: Colorful Stories of the Arroyo Seco and Beyond, Illustrated Lecture and Book Signing. Local historian and former Vice-Chair of Education for the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation (SPPF) Rick Thomas will present slides showing our local history from a unique perspective, including rare historical images and stories of the Arroyo Seco and surrounding communities. Thomas is known for his fascinating history presentations where he blends little known historical facts with rare and sometimes controversial images. Rick Thomas has authored three books in the Images of America series: South Pasadena, South Pasadena’s Ostrich Farm, and The Arroyo Seco. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Friday, July 25, 10:00 am: A Child’s Life. A Child’s Life is a special program designed to help elementary school aged children explore what it was like growing up in Pasadena in the late 1800s. Participants will receive the award winning book The Way Pasadena Was by Kathleen Thorne-Thomsen, view historic images, play old time games, and dress up in period clothing.

Altadena NAACP - 10th Anniversary of ACT-SO Competition

ACT-SO is a major youth initiative of the NAACP. It provides a forum through which African-American youth can demonstrate academic, artistic and scientific prowess and expertise, thereby gaining the same recognition often only reserved for entertainers and athletes.

The success of ACT-SO is due largely to the dedication of the ACT-SO local sponsoring unit adult volunteers, mentors and coaches. These individuals volunteer their time and resources to the youth in the communities. Altadena NAACP ACT-SO committee: Mrs. Juanita DeVaughn, Chairperson; Sameha Sudan, Co-Chair; Wendy Childress, Competition Coordinator; Paula DeVaughn, Event Coordinator and Attorney Wilberta Richardson, Committee Volunteer. Ms. Vertrice Nolen, community volunteer and representative for Wal-Mart Store in Santa Clarita, presented a check in the amount of $1,500.00 to ACT-SO.

Go Club for Teens

Go, the game of placing stones on a board is played all over Asia. It is also played in the popular Anime and Manga, Hikaru No Go. Fresh Start Tuesdays

La Pintoresca Branch Library and Women At Work successfully partnered six months ago to establish a satellite Women At Work office in Northwest Pasadena offering job seekers free assistance with resume writing, interviewing skills, job applications, and other career related matters.

Each Tuesday a representative from Women At Work is available at La Pintoresca Branch Library to provide one-on-one counseling services between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (626) 744-7268 to make your appointment.

Marriage Prep & Tune-Up: Seminar for Married and Engaged Couples

Lake Avenue Church is offering a "Marriage Prep & Tune-Up" seminar on Friday and Saturday, July 25-26, for married and engaged couples who want to enhance their relationships. Seminar times are Friday, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The seminar, presented by family counselors Marv and Joyce Warman, sexual relationship counselors Cliff and Joyce Penner, and financial counselor Del Goehner, covers such topics as couple dynamics, communication, financial harmony and enhancing your sex life. Registration is $40 for the seminar only, or $70 for the seminar and follow-up marriage or premarital counseling with a Lake Avenue counselor. A limited number of scholarships are available to couples who are willing to assist in specific aspects of the seminar.

Altadena NAACP Scholarship Application

The Altadena Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), through its Scholarship Program seeks to help increase the number of African Americans and other misrepresented minorities obtain an education in higher learning. By doing so, we help our nation address a critical need and a challenge to our future economic vitality in the world market. Two scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded. Scholarships are named after two prominent "Sheroes", Ms. Anthony (Tony) Stewart and Ms. Rosa Parks.

Career Fridays

La Pintoresca Branch Library has partnered with Foothill Employment and Training Connection (FETC), Pasadena City College and Women at Work to offer Career Fridays a weekly on-going program which offers career assistance workshops Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. at La Pintoresca’s Technology Learning Center.

The workshops will feature counselors, loan officers, city employers and other career service providers who will assist participants in how to make their job search process more effective and rewarding.

Participants will learn how to interview, write cover letters, and conduct an on-line job search. Workshops will also be offered in basic computer skills, web design, e-mail and much more. Computer Smart and Money Smart

The Pasadena Public Library will present Computer Smart and Money Smart, a computer module program for teens at Central Library’s Technology Learning Center, 285 E. Walnut St., Aug. 11 to 17. Participants must attend an orientation meeting prior to beginning the computer modules. Orientations will be held at Central Library’s Technology Learning Center on Monday, Aug. 11 at 3 and 7 p.m.

Become money smart in no time as you work at your own pace through ten computer modules on money matters at the Pasadena Public Library. The modules are; Bank on It: Introduction to Bank Services, Borrowing Basics: An Introduction to Credit, Check It Out: How to Choose and Maintain a Checking Account, Money Matters: How to Keep Track of Your Money, Pay Yourself First: Why You Should Save, Save, Save, Keep It Safe: Your Rights as a Consumer, To Your Credit: How your Credit History will affect your Credit Future, Charge it Right: How to Make a Credit Card Work for You, Loan to Own: Know What You’re Borrowing before You Buy and What Home Ownership is all about.

Job Seekers Assistance Group meets Tuesday, July 29 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at La Pintoresca Branch Library.

Job Seekers is a support group for people going through a career transition. Participants share their experiences with others undergoing the same circumstances.

Japanese Drumming with Talkoproject

Do you want to be a part of something sensational? Then be sure to drop in to join in the rhythmic sensations of Taiko drumming at Allendale Branch Library on Tuesday, July 29 at 3 p.m. as they present TAIKOPROJECT.

TAIKOPROJECT is a group of premiere Taiko drummers dedicated to preserving this Japanese tradition who take this ancient art form to new levels incorporating contemporary technologies and musical influences. This concert is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Recording Industries’ Music Performance Fund through the assistance of the Professional Musicians Union Local 47.
