AKA Celebrates Fifth Annual Scholarship Workshop at Pasadena High School

African American news from Pasadena - AKA Celebrates Scholarship WorkshopPasadena, CA -- Students applying for college scholarships were able to take advantage of a free college scholarship workshop hosted by the Eta Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on Saturday, November 14.

The workshop, "Their Wallet, Your Education: How Anyone Can Win Money to Go to College" is in its fifth year of sharing information with high school students looking for ways to fund their college education.  Forty students and parents turned out for the workshop that was hosted in the Pasadena High School cafeteria.

"This event is important because a higher education is a must in order for children to be successful in life," said Elise Mallory, president of AKA's Pasadena Chapter.  She then added, "A college education is expensive.  In order to lighten the burden, our kids need to find monies that help to pay for their education.  Since scholarship funds are not owed back to the provider, these are the best funds to use for this goal."

Those who attended were walked through the process of completing a college scholarship application, how to write an essay and the essentials in dressing for and succeeding in the interview process.

Featured keynote speaker, Dr. Tony Ross, Cal State LA's Vice President of Student Affairs advised students on what to expect once they arrive on the college campus.  Dr. Ross also shared scholarship opportunities available in California as well how the upcoming deadline of December 1, 2009 for application to California State Universities is just around the corner.

Ms. Alicia Green, who financed her own education with scholarships, was also a guest speaker. Ms. Green shared information about Pasadena City College, and its scholarship opportunities where she works in the financial aid office.  Attendees also received a scholarship folder with a CD containing over 100 scholarships.
