Katy Townsend, Our Businessperson of the Month
In the past, the Journal has featured businesses during Black Business Month, and Black Business Week and Women in Business at our Women of Achievement Breakfasts. We will now begin to feature a Business of the Month, this month with a phenomenal woman, Katy Townsend, owner Katey’s Beauty Salon located in Pasadena, CA. Katy is well known in the Pasadena, Altadena area. She has recently published a book called, “Faith, My life in California.” This Mississippi native packed up her three children and her mom and came to California in 1965. In those thirty years, she worked at a laundry, an electronics shop, at Burroughs, and later Xerox where she took classes. Katy worked her way up from the one dollar thirty-seven cents per hour at the laundry, to three dollars and twenty cents, and later at Xerox of over six dollars per hour, working at night while simultaneously working at J.C. Penney, for nine years. She attended Pasadena City College, studying Cosmetology until 1995. After graduation, she worked in a few salons until she was able to open her own beauty shop which she has maintained for over twenty-five-years. She has maintained some of her clients through those years which is evidence of the quality of her work. The book is filled with testimonials from many clients and friends, including State Senator Anthony Portantino. One such testimonial included the statement, “You took many of us from all of the sadness and chaos of our young lives. You helped mold me into the woman I am today …You have never changed…and always had such a genuine heart. You are such a beautiful woman inside and out. We love you.” Another testimonial states, “… [You are] a remarkable woman, successful entrepreneur, and outstanding community volunteer …Your beauty salon isn’t just a popular beauty center, it’s a center of positive activity for the neighborhood and the greater community.” Katy attends Metropolitan Baptist Church in Altadena, CA where she and her children practice their Faith. Because of her achievements and willingness to share her talents, we are proud to pronounce Ms. Katy Townsend as our Businessperson of the Month. Her book, “Faith,” provides testimony to Katy’s work.
