February is the month we celebrate love. We make special plans for Valentine’s Day and buy cards, gifts, and balloons for the love of our life. Those of us who are married have an occasion to turn up our love and enjoy a good time together.
“I take you to be my (husband/ wife); to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, to love and to cherish, and to be faithful to you alone, as long as we both shall live.” “I take you to be my (husband/ wife); to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, to love and to cherish, and to be faithful to you alone, as long as we both shall live.” Serious illness is one of those things we dread. A sick spouse ads sadness, pressure, new responsibility, uncertainty, fear, etc... etc...to your life equation. In addition to a spouse, you become a caregiver. You may have to help bathe, dress, as well as shop, cook, clean, etc...You may make many trips to the pharmacy, doctor or even the hospital. You will need a strong commitment and faith to honor the “in sickness and in health “ part of your vows. You will also need to make sure you are taking care of yourself, while you are taking care of your spouse. I believe where there is life there is hope. God is a healer and answers prayers. That’s the fi rst place to start. You will need support, so welcome and even request the assistance of the medical/home health professionals, your family and friends. It’s been said that it’s not what happens to you, but how you handle it, that matters. When sickness befalls you, handle it with love, with prayer, with hope and with help. I’ve worked with many spouses who have lost a life partner after a bout of sickness. Those that honored their vows hurt, but have a peace that comes from knowing that they loved and cared for their mate. So make memories while you can, love on each other no matter what and cherish the time you have together. Happy Valentine’s Day from a Valentine! Gail Valentine Taylor, M.S.W.
