Food Drive Launched to Help Families Displaced by Fire

To assist approximately 25 families, including several Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) students who were displaced after the devastating February 24 apartment complex fire in Pasadena. PUSD is launching a food drive to collect donations of non-perishable food that can be easily prepared in microwave ovens. Items to be donated can be brought to any PUSD school or the Families in Transition office at district headquarters.

25 students have been affected by the fire. Among the schools that these students attend include Madison Elementary School, Don Benito Fundamental School, Washington Accelerated School, Washington Middle School, Wilson Middle School, Muir High School, Blair High School, three Head Start Centers and Learning Works Charter School.

PUSD's Healthy Start staff is providing case management for the victims to help ensure needs are met and residents do not go homeless during this time of transition. PUSD's Families in Transition program is providing food, clothing, toys and other needed resources, such as transportation for school-age youth to and from school. The Pasadena Housing Department and Friends in Deed are actively working to arrange long-term housing for those without friends or family to stay with. The Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF), the City of Pasadena, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross are also working to support both immediate needs and long-term care to the families who lost their home and belongings in the fire.

Donations of non-perishable food can be made at any PUSD school. To see a list of schools, please visit www.pusd.us and click schools at the top of the page.

Food and donations will also be collected at the PUSD Board of Education meeting on March 12.

A Fire Relief Fund has been set up to handle monetary donations and will be managed through the Pasadena Educational Foundation. Funds will go to help fire victims with temporary housing costs, relocation assistance and other household needs.

Monetary Donations can be made to: Pasadena Educational Foundation, 351 S. Hudson Avenue, Room 153, Pasadena, CA 91109, Attention: Fire Relief Fund.
