Assemblymember Hall Gives Over 5,000 Turkeys to Needy Families and Helps Thousands Live Healthier Lives

Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III's (D-Los Angeles) nearly decade long commitment to neighborhood empowerment turned into a community festival when over 5,000 residents participated in the nineth annual Healthy Family Update and Turkey Giveaway in Compton.

With the help of nearly 200 volunteers and the generosity of businesses throughout Los Angeles County, Hall's Healthy Family Update and Turkey Giveaway is a multi-prong philanthropic collaboration between Hall, local officials and community leaders committed to reducing incidents of obesity, diabetes and HIV/AIDS in underserved communities while promoting healthier lifestyles for children and families.

This year, Hall partnered with various organizations including Progress California, Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy, YP (formerly Yellow Pages), Radio Free KJLH 102.3, local elected officials, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and non-profit organizations to provide over 5,000 turkeys to families in need, discuss legislative issues and offer free diabetes, HIV testing, blood pressure and BMI health screenings to residents. Guest speakers provided information about hypertension, obesity, diabetes, HIV prevention and kidney care, as well as healthy eating tips to make it through the holidays.

Representatives from Covered California also provided information in five languages and helped residents sign up for free or low-cost health insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA). Hall's 64th Assembly District has the second highest concentration of residents eligible for financial assistance through the ACA in California and this event helped thousands of residents in Los Angeles County enroll in Covered California's highly successful health insurance marketplace.

"Great things are happening in Compton and throughout the 64th Assembly District!" exclaimed Assemblymember Hall. "This year's event was the latest example of how we can bring out the best in people by giving back to those in need. This year's success would not have been possible without the selflessness and generosity of volunteers and businesses who provided thousands of residents with not only a warm meal this Thanksgiving, but vital information to lead healthier, more empowered lives."
