85 Female Inmates Graduate From MERIT Program
Century Regional Detention Facility
Who: Sheriff Lee Baca, Commander Stephen Johnson, Captain Joe Nunez, Lieutenant La Mar La Fave, Century Regional Detention Facility Personnel, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department; John Muir Charter School Teachers and Staff; L.A. Works Teachers and Staff.
What: The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Education Based Incarceration Bureau will host a graduation ceremony for its M.E.R.I.T. (Maximizing Education Reaching Individual Transformation) Program. Approximately 85 female inmates from the Century Regional Detention Facility who have participated in the program will receive certificates for completing classes in Life Skills, Computer Skills, Parenting, Culinary, and Sewing. Additionally, two inmates in this class will be receiving their High School diploma through a program offered by John Muir Charter School.
Governor Signs Assemblymember Holden's First Bill
AB 72 – Water District Directors
Sacramento, CA - Water District Directors has been signed by Governor Brown. It is the first bill from freshman Assemblymember and Majority Whip Holden (D-Pasadena) to be signed into law and goes into effect January 1, 2014.
"I appreciate Governor Brown's support for this good government measure and applaud the overwhelming bi-partisan support for the bill shown by my colleagues in both the Assembly and the Senate," Assemblymember Chris Holden's bill to standardize the start date of newly elected Municipal stated Assemblymember Holden. "This bill will ensure water districts are able to move swiftly between terms and critical business is not delayed unnecessarily."
Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown to Host Green Collar Jobs Event
San Bernardino, CA - In partnership with environmental advocates Grid Alternatives and the Sierra Club, Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown will host a Green Mixer on Thursday, June 27 at the Vanir Tower in San Bernardino from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The event will feature networking opportunities with employers from the green collar jobs sector in the Inland Empire.
"The goal of this event is to spread the word about the availability of green collar jobs in our region. We will have several employers on hand to explain the employment opportunities available in their respective companies, so I encourage the public to attend this important event," said Assemblymember Brown.
Participating companies include Grid Alternatives, Sullivan Solar Power, Renewable Energy Education Solutions, Kelly Space & Technology, SANBAG, AQMD, Southern California Gas Company, YouthPower Community Solutions, Coast Career Institute, SunRun, Solar City, Verengo, and the California Solar Energy Industries Association.
