Each year as January 15 rolls around, we are reminded that Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. lived. He preached the word of God and helped the world to understand what love of fellow man was about, and then he died, leaving the work of spreading equality to the rest of us.

When I have occasion to mentor young people, I always advise them to read a newspaper every day. The purpose is to keep up with what is happening in the world and keep improving their reading skills. An example of the benefits of reading newspapers was demonstrated this past weekend. I discovered that Cal State Los Angeles, along the bastion of producing Black college graduates, has a new President, William Covino. He replaces James Rosser who was there 34 years.

2013 has ended with a BANG for my family. 2014 holds the blessing of a positive year for our family and for America. On December 11, 2013 my granddaughter was hit by a car who ran the red light causing her 2005 car to turn over onto its left side and then flip back up on its four wheels. Her left rear axle, wheel and tire was left horizontal. She was hurt, but alive. My response was, "Thank you, Jesus."

As we come again to that time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ, I'm looking back at last year's column and find that some things need to be repeated and some things are new. Last year at this time, we as a nation were grieving the death of 20 children and 6 adults at a school shooting in Connecticut. This was followed in Pasadena by the shooting death of our friend Victor McClinton, on Christmas day 2012, by local gang members.
