"Conservatives are working hard to try to get Obama out of office.
I think that this President has our backs. We need to let the conservative politicians know that we have his."
I watched as NBC Commentator Pat Buchannan went into a rant about Judge Sotomayor not being qualified for the Supreme Court because she was a product of Affirmative Action. He went on to say that white men had done everything significant in America. He said they had fought the Revolutionary war, wrote the Declaration of Independence, wrote the Constitution, and done everything else of significance, therefore, it was OK that historically it was right that almost all of the Judges on the Supreme Court in the past had been white men, and it was Ok that the Senate is filled with white men.

When President Barack Obama made his speech on Saturday in Ghana, West Africa I was first reminded of my trip to West Africa in 1993. And then as he began to speak saying things like "Freedom is the inheritance of Africans" and "Africa's Future is up to Africans", it all started to sound like the same tough love messages that needs to be modified for and given to African Americans.

When my third granddaughter was born, her parents were living in Manchester, England where my son was going working on his Doctorate. When we got the word that they were going to have a baby, we just knew that they would need money. With checkbook poised to assist, we asked how much they needed. The answer was that there was no cost because in England Health care was free.

The two things that are probably the most important unnatural elements in life. They are economics and education, and they are interdependent on one another. Show me an uneducated person and I will show you a hungry person. Put another way, learn a trade or starve.
The BLACK PRESS USA is alive and well!
This past weekend I attended the Annual Conference of the Black Press known as the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). It is always inspirational to be part of the giants in the newspaper business who historically have had a double duty. The Black Press of America has had to balance fighting racism, discrimination, and segregation, while trying to build and run a profitable business. This is a balancing act that still goes on today.

Summer is a time for young people to explore and prepare for the next chapter in their educational lives on the road toward adulthood. There is lots of talk of there being few summer jobs and even fewer summer programs for youth. With that in mind, it falls on parents to plan for all of the above, at home. Why can't there be Summer School at home in the form of reading projects and math projects like teaching the kids the family budget? Give them jobs at home or go out and find them a job or internship, even if they have to volunteer with you giving them a stipend.
There is always the lawn to cut which can end up being a year round job with the possibility of expanding into doing the neighbors' lawn. There is probably a room in the house that could use some painting or the garage needing clean up or organization. Any work experience can help young people prepare for the real world of work. I was taught that "if you don't work, you will steal." Too many young people, especially the boys, don't understand the relationship between work and money. Too many children grow up learning "ask and it shall be given." Then the real world hits them in the face as an adult, and lo and behold, the rules change to "no work, no pay." Then you're back to "if you don't work, you don't eat."
