How Did We Get Here?

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - if we can beat slavery, we can beat a battle for health careThis week I went out and bought a copy of Deborah Cox' CD, for one song, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here." The song asks the question, "How did you get here?" It is a love song from the 1980s, but spells out the dilemma of America today. If Black America, with the help of God, white liberals, progressives, and independents can beat slavery, this same team can beat a battle for health care.

It Really Does Take a Village

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - National institute needs a villageI am seeking support from the community for an organization envisioned by my son, Dr. Jamal Dominique Hopkins. Jamal, our third of three sons, was born this month (October) and was raised in Pasadena, California and attended schools in the Pasadena Unified School District. He has always been a dutiful, obedient son. He has educated himself and distinguished himself in his career. As he embarks on a new journey, we call on friends and associates who believe the African proverb, "It Takes a Village to Raise A Child," for support.

Shutdown Means Shutout

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Shutdown means shutoutOnce again my Daddy's saying that there are some White folks who don't sleep at night trying to figure out new ways to keep Black folks down, rings true. Currently, we have a government shutdown started by Southern White congressmen who don't want Black and poor folks to have affordable healthcare, named Obamacare, after the country's first Black president. The Affordable Care Act is here to stay and it affects not only Black folks but White folks as well. It was a furloughed White woman who said, "I'm terrified of where we are today. These White Republicans are American terrorists dedicated to maintaining their privileged positions in a world they define in terms of White supremacy."

These people rose from the dust pod of life during the reign of King Baracko. They had existed since the time of slavery in the land of America, but legitimate power was never to be theirs.
