Thanksgiving Thoughts: What/Who Makes You So Strong?

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - Thanksgiving and who makes us strongWhen President Barack Obama made his acceptance speech after winning his second term to be President of the United States of America, I heard the first signs of militance that I have ever heard from him. When he used the refrain of "what makes us so strong as a nation", he was repeating words from Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Reverend Wright, a brilliant, inspiring leader of Black America was supposedly thrown under the bus by then presidential candidate Obama. What I appreciate about President Obama is his brilliance. He is a pragmatist. I don't think he threw Wright under the bus at all and, in fact, Otis Moss who took over from Wright at the United Church of Christ in Chicago serves on one of the Presidents' advisory boards.

Teach the Children About Barack Obama

As a Source of Pride, Joy and Inspiration

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Lessons from President ObamaThe history books say that African Americans arrived on American shores in 1619, as slaves. New history books should say that, in 2008, African Americans had overcome slavery and overcame legalized Jim Crow and discrimination, and conquered the country and elected a Black President named Barack Obama. The message from President Barack Obama to the children is, "we still have more work to do." That message is for individuals and the nation, as well.

Teach the children that this new President was re-elected in 2012, against all odds, and the loser is still wondering how he did it. Tell them that his father was absent and his mother was, at times, on welfare. Teach them that life is not where you start but where you end up, and what you do between where you start and where you end up counts.

Foundations Funding Voter Suppression Are New Klu Klux Klan Members

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - Voter Suppression Are New Klu Klux Klan MembersThe history of this great country is littered with people and organizations who are dedicated to maintaining, or dare I say conserving, the way of life that guarantees the myth of White Supremacy. In the early days of this country, the Klu-Klux Klan and their cousins, the White Citizens Council, were formed to maintain the flame of supremacy. Today, the keepers of the flame are foundations and billionaires like the now infamous Koch Brothers and Vegas casino owner, Sheldon Adelson, and others of their ilk. This week, the Melissa Harris Perry show on MSNBC exposed two more keepers of the flame, The Einhorn Foundation and the Bradley Foundation. Blacks who flock to Las Vegas Sands should know that their their hard earned dollars are funding people and policies against their own self interests.

Racism Trumps Religion in the Republican/Tea Party

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Racism Trumps Religion in the Republican/Tea PartyThere was a time when Christians tended to be more concerned with candidates who shared issues of their faith than with any thing else. That all seems to have gone by the wayside with a Black Christian President named Barack Obama and the possibility that he will serve another term. The so-called Christians today would rather vote for a candidate who is a member of a cult, by their own definition, and is a liar acting in violation of God's law that says, "Thou shall not bear false witness," i.e.: lie.

The Christian Holy Bible says that liars shall burn in the lake of fire. White Republicans who profess to be Christians seem to be willing to burn in the lake of fire than re-elect a black president. The other conclusion is that they are not true followers of Jesus Christ and never believed in Jesus Christ in the first place. In past years, they have called themselves the moral majority, but they are neither moral nor are they the majority.

Vote in Your Own Self Interest

TheBlack news from Pasadena - Editorial - strength in numbers...vote in your own self interest...re is a Christmas song that says, "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas." Well it's beginning to feel a lot like election time as we draw nearer to November 6, 2012 to determine whether the money of racist billionaires can outdo the will of the people to re-elect Barack Obama for a second term.

I've seen a lot of elections in my years on this earth, but I can't remember when racism and sexism played such a great part. Every time I hear a Republican talk about returning to better times, I wonder what times are they talking about? Are they talking about a time when a Black person could only dream of being elected President of the United States? Is that why they call it the American Dream?

The other point that is interesting is the large number of persons who are willing to vote against their own self interests. Why? There are women who are willing to vote for a man who is promising to close the door to affordable health care for women, such as Planned Parenthood, and prescribe to a theory that women should work, even if they are not guaranteed wages equal to men for the same work as spelled out in the Lilly Ledbetter Act. This was the first bill that President Obama signed once he was elected to the office of President.
