Thanks to the economic times we live in, there are millions of families living paycheck to paycheck. One person expresses it this way when she says, "The economic burden of one flat tire could cause them to have to become poverty stricken and homeless." Former California first lady, Maria Shriver took a look at this economic phenomena in a documentary made for an HBO television special entitled, Paycheck to Paycheck. A preview was presented on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Television Network.

I am always fascinated by new business ideas and new ways to run them. I like to watch a small business grow from a sales cart to a brick and mortar store or office. Last year, I came across an old Black Enterprise magazine about a young lady who took her dancing skills to the Detroit community by gutting a bus and starting a dance studio to teach dancing.

I hope April 12th is marked on your calendar for a breakfast date with eight special women who have given much to their chosen community church. They have done much more than the standard P.P. and O. (Pray, Pay, and Obey).

Affirmative Action laws in California were on their way back, thanks to the Democrats. The Republicans killed the law sixteen years ago, thanks to Republicans, White and Black (via Ward Connor). A rebirth was on the way, as I understand it, with a bill/constitutional amendment put forth by Mexican American State Senator, Ed Hernandez. The opposition this time seems to be Asian American legislators, apparently afraid of losing their advantage in California's Community Colleges and State Universities. They currently make up nearly 40 percent of the student population. Blacks make up only 3.7 percent, down from approximately 16 percent sixteen years ago.

In the book of Lamentations, we find a verse that talks about new mercies from God provided to us each morning. Specifically, the third chapter of Lamentations, verses 22 and 23, the Bible says (22), "It is the Lords mercies that we are not consumed because his mercies, compassion fails not." (23) "They are new every morning." These powerful verses were the basis of a song by CeCe Winans, around 1996. In my mind, it is the basis of the old song we sang in the church I went to as a child that says, "Take the Lord with you in the morning when I rise." It may be the basis of books and poems with similar titles using the phrase, "When I rise."
