In the book of Lamentations, we find a verse that talks about new mercies from God provided to us each morning. Specifically, the third chapter of Lamentations, verses 22 and 23, the Bible says (22), "It is the Lords mercies that we are not consumed because his mercies, compassion fails not." (23) "They are new every morning." These powerful verses were the basis of a song by CeCe Winans, around 1996. In my mind, it is the basis of the old song we sang in the church I went to as a child that says, "Take the Lord with you in the morning when I rise." It may be the basis of books and poems with similar titles using the phrase, "When I rise."

2014 WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT
This week, we had a photo shoot with the Journal Women of Achievement, class of 2014. They are a fascinating group of women. They are all long-time Christian women who immediately connected with each other in many different ways. They are all parents. They are teachers, postal service workers and achievers in their own right. Two women are the mothers of Superior Court judges. They are mothers of businessmen and businesswomen. They are the mothers of achievers who have yet to receive the public acclaim they deserve. Pride wakes them up daily to step into a world that did not treat them as the queens they are. They are the products of societal rejection that they did not accept. They have been blessed over the years to overcome and have generously given their time and talent to their church - the one surviving Institution that helped us come from nowhere.

"We salute you for being the change you wish to see."
Over the past seven years the Pasadena Journal has honored women leaders. They include women from social service organizations including AKA and Delta Sororities, Phi Delta Kappa, The Links, Women In Action, and Jack and Jill. We honored women in business as well as women pioneers including Pasadena's first Black teachers, principals, and realtors. We have also honored women in medicine and women in ministry. The event will be held April 12, 2014 at 9:00 a.m., at Brookside Club House, in Pasadena, CA.

I remember community college being free and available to every student as providing a career path or a road to a four year college career. With three siblings and three sons, we valued education and it made the difference for even those who for reasons that are insignificant did not graduate. Somewhere along the way, it became another family expense. Not getting the education could have been even more expensive.

As we celebrate Black History Month, there is much to be proud of, but there is much to remember and improve on. In the area of pride, we have come from being occupants of the slave cabin to occupy the White House. In the area of needing improvement, we need to learn the benefits of ownership to be truly free.
