The Entrepreneurial Spirit . . .

. . . That Built Motown and the Underground Railroad

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Entrepreneurial spirit now and in pastMy wife, Ruthie, and I recently travelled to the city of Detroit for the celebration of the life of our former pastor's wife, Sister Jackie Cushman. While paying our respects to the memory of a very special lady and Pastor Tyrone Cushman, we visited a few historical sites, during our visit. Although we have travelled to over twenty of the United States, three African countries, Paris, France, Manchester, and London, England, and a few Caribbean countries, this was our first trip to Detroit. We also visited Canada, which was just across the river from our hotel.

Who Owns Your Village?

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - Who owns your villageWe all know about New Orleans and the great flood of 2005 known as Katrina. We all know that the Ninth Ward which is predominantly the Black neighborhood of that great historical city has yet to be rebuilt. The Black folks were cleared out like the Native Americans were cleared out of the Great Plains of this country. We know that in July 2013, the once great city of Detroit, Michigan filed for bankruptcy, after the automobile industry cleared out. The demise of the city, under the reign of Mayor Dave Bing (a former NBA player) followed the reign of African American Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the so-called Hip Hop Mayor. It is noted that the plan being negotiated by Detroit in the bankruptcy includes an essential clause that makes sure the banks get paid while the pensioners get a whole lot less.

The Racists are Restless

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Racists are restlessActivities of American racists, primarily represented by the Republican Party and so-called Tea Party, seem to be more restless than ever. Their activities are on the verge of fitting the definition of craziness. This time, there will not be the luxury of saying it is a southern thing. In New York, a statue of Jackie Robinson and Pewee Reese was defiled with swastikas and other racist symbols. In Washington D.C., the Abraham Lincoln statue was defiled with green paint. Now, racist right wing commentators are calling Oprah Winfrey a racist and a merchant of hate and evil, in response to her statement of her opinion comparing the Trayvon Martin case to the 1960's Emmit Till case. It seems that if you don't agree with the racists of the Republican right wing, who make their money spouting and promoting hate, you are subject to attack.

Jim Crow 2013 Style

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - Jim Crow 2013 style - Nina Simone sang about the "civil rights"Comedian and Civil Rights activist, Dick Gregory, used to say that he spent ten years in Mississippi, one night. Nina Simone, in 1963, wrote and sang a song called "Mississippi Goddam", in response to the killing of Medgar Evers, in Mississippi, and the bombing death of the four little girls, in Alabama. Nina, who was known to use a gun on certain occasions, chose writing the song as opposed to going out to shoot somebody, where she says, "Alabama's got me upset, Tennessee made me lose my rest, but Mississippi Goddam, and I mean every word of it."

Race Problem Still Lives in America

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Race Problem Still AliveThe Trayvon Martin case, and other recent events, reminds many Black Americans, especially those of us who are older, of our past. Last week I wrote of a Black Pasadenan woman who was arrested for calling the Pasadena Police to stop a potentially brutal fight between her two sons. She was in bed at her home when the fight broke out and called the police. She gave a clear, concise recorded statement to the 911 operator and asked for help and gave a description of the events and her location.

For some reason, the police became so enraged at the mother that they arrested her and charged her with public drunkenness after they had her to come outside of her house and onto the walkway leading to the sidewalk. To add insult to injury, in the report, written by Officer Hamblin and approved by a Sergeant Alainiz, the mother was called a Bitch. Specifically, Hamblin wrote he asked her a question and she "BITCHED UP".
