The Pasadena-Altadena Community Endowment Fund (PACEF) awarded $10,000 in scholarships to two outstanding local area high school graduates. Genevieve Harvey, a graduate of Blair High School and Mason Usher, a graduate of John Muir Early College Magnet High School were each awarded a $5,000 scholarship as part of PACEF’s ongoing effort to support underserved minority students accepted into accredited universities and colleges.
Both Genevieve and Mason are excited about receiving the awards as well as their future college plans. Genevieve will attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tennessee, where she will major in Neuroscience and minor in Anthropology. She is grateful for the opportunity this award provides, “Being a recipient of this scholarship and now being in a network of supportive and educated individuals is a blessing. I am beyond grateful for this organization financing my pursuits for higher education.” Mason will attend Brown University in Providence Rhode Island, where he will major in Computer Science and be a part of a pre-med program titled Liberal Medical Education. “This award will allow me to initiate my educational journey, from Brown University to Warren Alpert Medical School, along with giving me a greater opportunity to reach a future my grandfather imagined for me; one where I am able to help people through the application of my mind and medicine. I am honored and thankful for this award.” PACEF President, Ashana Thorman shares, “Awarding these scholarships year after year is a privilege, especially in 2021. During these challenging times with the pandemic and social unrest, we are grateful to have the continued and generous support of our donors.” PACEF has awarded $52,000 in college scholarships over the past six years. The organization boasts an endowment fund of nearly $500,000. The endowment is earmarked to benefit the greater Pasadena community by way of scholarships given to local high school students based on need and merit. PACEF’s future goal is to grow the endowment to a million dollars by the year 2030. The Pasadena-Altadena Community Endowment Fund (PACEF) is a 501c (3) organization that was established in 1998 as a charitable foundation to support educational and charitable activities for the benefit of the greater Pasadena community.
