Pasadena Tournament of Roses Announces Winners of Second Annual Día de los Muertos - A Celebration of Art
The Pasadena Tournament of Roses® has announced winners of the second annual Día de los Muertos art competition in partnership with: Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions; Baja Ranch Markets; The Lucille & Edward R. Roybal Foundation; Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles; The Paleta Cart Party; Pasadena Police Foundation and My Cajita. “When it comes to traditions, festivities and flowers – we get the appeal!” said Tournament of Roses President Bob Miller. “As an organization that’s all about a rose, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses can appreciate that the Día de los Muertos marigold holds such a prestigious place in this 3,000-year-old celebration, that originated in Mexico.” The submissions showcased the traditions of Día de los Muertos and artistic talent in numerous artforms, including drawing, face painting, poetry and more. We would like to thank our art competition judges for their time in viewing more than 300 entries: Chad Augustin - Fire Chief, City of Pasadena; Honorable Berlinda Brown - Pasadena City College, Area 3 Trustee; Elvia Cano - Public Information Officer, LAUSD, Local District East; Marcela Celorio, Consul General, Mexican Embassy of Los Angeles Diana Gonzalez - Vice President, Deodate, Honorable Tyron Hampton - City of Pasadena Councilman, District 1; Theresa Martinez - CEO/President, Community Connection LLC; Dr. Brian McDonald -Superintendent, Pasadena Unified School District; Veronica Melvin - CEO/President, LA Promise Fund; Ramon Miramontes, Chair Honorary Host Committee; Robin Salzer, President - San Rafael Neighborhood Association and Crystal Torres - Board Director, Lucile & Edward R. Roybal Foundation. More than $5,000 in scholarships and cash awards were presented in three age categories. Cash awards will be presented in the 4-8 and 9-13 age categories. Scholarships will be presented in the 14 to 18 age category.
