Ben Jealous Leaving the NAACP

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Ben Jealous leaving NAACPThe NAACP continues to be an important piece of American history, and so it was a shock when Ben Jealous announced that he was resigning. He implied that a female was taking over.

I am not sure that it matters who takes over the organization which still is the most important organization in the struggle for equality in America. Unlike international organizations where leadership passes from one person to another, the NAACP leads the country's massive population in their struggle for equality in America. It is the oldest Civil Rights organization in America and the one that holds the largest amount of power in terms of leadership.

No to Another War . . . Where’s the Quid Pro Quo for Black America?

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - No to another war - where's the quid pro quo for Black AmericaIf I were grading President Obama, I would give him an A minus. I would give him an A because he has achieved so many things that other presidents before him have failed to do. His primary legislative accomplishments have been the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare. I know it's a great accomplishment because the Republicans have dedicated their recent careers to trying to repeal it.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit . . .

. . . That Built Motown and the Underground Railroad

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Entrepreneurial spirit now and in pastMy wife, Ruthie, and I recently travelled to the city of Detroit for the celebration of the life of our former pastor's wife, Sister Jackie Cushman. While paying our respects to the memory of a very special lady and Pastor Tyrone Cushman, we visited a few historical sites, during our visit. Although we have travelled to over twenty of the United States, three African countries, Paris, France, Manchester, and London, England, and a few Caribbean countries, this was our first trip to Detroit. We also visited Canada, which was just across the river from our hotel.

Who Owns Your Village?

Black news from Pasadena - Editorial - Who owns your villageWe all know about New Orleans and the great flood of 2005 known as Katrina. We all know that the Ninth Ward which is predominantly the Black neighborhood of that great historical city has yet to be rebuilt. The Black folks were cleared out like the Native Americans were cleared out of the Great Plains of this country. We know that in July 2013, the once great city of Detroit, Michigan filed for bankruptcy, after the automobile industry cleared out. The demise of the city, under the reign of Mayor Dave Bing (a former NBA player) followed the reign of African American Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the so-called Hip Hop Mayor. It is noted that the plan being negotiated by Detroit in the bankruptcy includes an essential clause that makes sure the banks get paid while the pensioners get a whole lot less.

The Racists are Restless

African American news from Pasadena - Editorial - Racists are restlessActivities of American racists, primarily represented by the Republican Party and so-called Tea Party, seem to be more restless than ever. Their activities are on the verge of fitting the definition of craziness. This time, there will not be the luxury of saying it is a southern thing. In New York, a statue of Jackie Robinson and Pewee Reese was defiled with swastikas and other racist symbols. In Washington D.C., the Abraham Lincoln statue was defiled with green paint. Now, racist right wing commentators are calling Oprah Winfrey a racist and a merchant of hate and evil, in response to her statement of her opinion comparing the Trayvon Martin case to the 1960's Emmit Till case. It seems that if you don't agree with the racists of the Republican right wing, who make their money spouting and promoting hate, you are subject to attack.
