Watching the 2012 CNN special on "Heroes" brought to mind the changes we are seeing in America and provides some answers to where we are headed if we keep following the pattern set by the Tea Party. CNN presents the annual program, emceed by Anderson Cooper, of portraits of people fighting poverty, pain, and disunity across the world.
The program demonstrates what happens when government takes (tax) money from the people but doesn't use it to take care of its people, i.e. no medical treatment for the poor, no schools for the poor, especially for girls, the boys trade their school books for street life, ignorance of basic information like knowing how to swim can create a vulnerability to death by drowning, and drowning in a sea of ignorance because the young can't read.

2012 has been a year for the history books and, for me, a year of learning about people who never cease to amaze me. The most amazing thing is that I can't believe how stupid so many people can be by believing almost everything they hear.
The mass number of Americans who listened to the Tea Party believed that President Obama would actually implement legislation to take people's guns away from them and that the affordable health care bill (known as Obama Care) was something that will destroy America. If they read it, they will discover that it will make health care more affordable for them and all Americans. It's in the title (stupid) i.e., Affordable Health Care. It's kind of like the title of a game called, basketball which describes a basket and a ball. That's simple enough.

When President Barack Obama made his acceptance speech after winning his second term to be President of the United States of America, I heard the first signs of militance that I have ever heard from him. When he used the refrain of "what makes us so strong as a nation", he was repeating words from Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Reverend Wright, a brilliant, inspiring leader of Black America was supposedly thrown under the bus by then presidential candidate Obama. What I appreciate about President Obama is his brilliance. He is a pragmatist. I don't think he threw Wright under the bus at all and, in fact, Otis Moss who took over from Wright at the United Church of Christ in Chicago serves on one of the Presidents' advisory boards.

As a Source of Pride, Joy and Inspiration
The history books say that African Americans arrived on American shores in 1619, as slaves. New history books should say that, in 2008, African Americans had overcome slavery and overcame legalized Jim Crow and discrimination, and conquered the country and elected a Black President named Barack Obama. The message from President Barack Obama to the children is, "we still have more work to do." That message is for individuals and the nation, as well.
Teach the children that this new President was re-elected in 2012, against all odds, and the loser is still wondering how he did it. Tell them that his father was absent and his mother was, at times, on welfare. Teach them that life is not where you start but where you end up, and what you do between where you start and where you end up counts.

The history of this great country is littered with people and organizations who are dedicated to maintaining, or dare I say conserving, the way of life that guarantees the myth of White Supremacy. In the early days of this country, the Klu-Klux Klan and their cousins, the White Citizens Council, were formed to maintain the flame of supremacy. Today, the keepers of the flame are foundations and billionaires like the now infamous Koch Brothers and Vegas casino owner, Sheldon Adelson, and others of their ilk. This week, the Melissa Harris Perry show on MSNBC exposed two more keepers of the flame, The Einhorn Foundation and the Bradley Foundation. Blacks who flock to Las Vegas Sands should know that their their hard earned dollars are funding people and policies against their own self interests.
