Choices, Choices, Choices

African American news from Pasadena - Religion - Choices"Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved." – William Jennings Bryan

"Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny." - Aristotle

God has given every man free will and deeply engineered in the soul of man is the power of choice. He instructed Adam, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die." (Genesis 2:18 KJV) This was a divine directive loaded with options. If it was not a choice then no consequence needed to be given; "if you eat you die."

Your life today is the sum total of every choice you have made as an adult. I am not referring to circumstances that were beyond our control, the grace of God will cover that, but we have more to do with the outcome of our own lives than we would like to admit. We choose healing, we choose success, we choose forgiveness, we choose bitterness, we choose love, we choose hatred, we choose kindness, we choose generosity, we choose selfishness, we choose obedience, we choose rebellion, we choose to harbor our past, and we choose to let it go... The list could be endless. Choices, Choices, Choices! Wherever we are in life is what voice we decided to listen to, Jesus said, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27 NIV) The majority of the fruitless state of affairs I have found myself in is because I chose to ignore the voice of the Holy Spirit. I wanted my way instead of His way.

Many believers today don't know the difference between a consequence and an attack. In the Christian world anything negative that happens must be the devil. Seldom do we re-evaluate our choices. Galatians 6:7 (NLT) decrees, "Don't be misled--you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant; those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit" In the midst of a trial the first question you should ask yourself is, "Did I sow for this?

Unfortunately, as Christians we spend much of our anointing cleaning up our mistakes rather than advancing the Kingdom of God. We are so busy trying to maintain ground that we are never advancing. I am not sure about you? But I am truly on a quest to do something significant for the Kingdom. I have made enough bad choices to last me the duration of my existence. As a result I am carefully weighing my affiliations, my relationships, my choices and swiftly eliminating anything that would cause me to lose ground.

Pastor Andy Stanley wrote an excellent book called, The Principle of the Path. The premise being our choices determine our direction and our direction determines our destination. The Bible is not just a book to read or take to church, it is an assemblage of principles to live by. If we leverage them, they work for us, if we don't they work against us. Like the law of buoyancy (Archimedes principle). If we leverage it, we float, if we don't, we drown. Furthermore, heaven and hell are not rewards or punishments for this life but are the outcome of choices we have made. Matthew 7:13 -14 states (NLT), "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it."

If I can leave you with anything, God has given us wisdom, which is the ability to live life wisely and make choices that are in line with our purpose. If any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives it to us generously (James 1:5). You do not have to continue to a life of chaos, dysfunction, depression, fear, intimidation, shame, guilt, condemnation, sin, lack or turmoil, you are without a doubt one choice away from Victory.
