Pasadena Presbyterian Church Presents 69th Free-Admission Candlelight and Carols Concert

Pasadena, CA (December 3, 2014) — Pasadena Presbyterian Church will present the 69th edition of its annual Candlelight and Carols concert on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the church Sanctuary, 585 E. Colorado Blvd. (corner of Madison Avenue) in the Playhouse District of downtown Pasadena.

The church's six choirs, an instrumental ensemble and organists Timothy Howard and Meaghan King will offer a varied program of sacred and secular music for the Christmas season. A highlight of the concert will be the audience joining in the singing of several familiar Christmas carols. A featured work on the program will be "On Christmas Night" by English composer Bob Chilcott, with Dr. Timothy Howard conducting the Kirk Choir and the instrumental ensemble.

As are all programs on the eight-concert Friends of Music at PPC series, the Candlelight and Carols concert is free (a freewill offering will be taken). Free parking is available and the Sanctuary is handicap-accessible. A dessert reception will follow the program.

The church will also offer Christmas Eve services at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24. The early service is family oriented; the 9 p.m. service includes the celebration of Holy Communion. Dr. Mark Smutny will preach and music will be provided by the Kirk Choir, the Van Etten Handbell Choir, and organists Timothy Howard and Meaghan King.

Upcoming events on 2013-2014 Friends of Music series are:

  • February 1: Crown City String Quartet
  • March 15: Organist Timothy Howard, who is also the church's Director of Music, plays his annual recital at PPC
  • April 18: 17th annual Good Friday Devotional Concert. The Kirk Choir, community singers, soloists and orchestra — directed by Timothy Howard — perform Bach's "St. John Passion."
  • May 17: Dorothy Young Riess, organist, makes her PPC recital debut.
  • June 7: Jazz for the City, the annual close to the FOM season, featuring The Afro-Cuban Jazz Project, led by Trumpeter Josiel Perez.

The church also sponsors its weekly free-admission "Music at Noon" concerts, which feature an eclectic mix of local, national and international artists, from 12:10-12:40 p.m. each Wednesday.

[About Pasadena Presbyterian Church:  Founded in 1875, Pasadena Presbyterian Church is the oldest congregation in the city. It continues to be a leader in the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination as three languages (English, Korean and Spanish) combine to worship, study and serve as one integrated congregation.  Music has been an integral part of the church's outreach to the community since Dr. Howard Swan became the church's music director in 1940. The church currently has hundreds of people participating in nine different choral and instrumental ensembles throughout the year under the overall leadership of Dr. Timothy Howard, Director of Music and Organist.]
