It is interesting to see politicians try to return to the past, with trying to stop so-called minorities from voting, and trying to stop schools from teaching about race, the reality of slavery, and the Ku Klux Klan and also trying to stop teaching about Civil Rights warriors such as Roy Wilkins, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson, Malcolm X, John Lewis, and even Jewish Ghettoes, the Holocaust and killing six million Jews, the Asian Exclusions, the Japanese Concentration Camps, and the killing of American Indians and stealing their land.
Now is the time for creating Community Schools to teach about the good, the bad, and the ugly of America. Now is the time to give free education on all subjects. Now is the time to feed all the people and the time to do away with homelessness. President Eisenhower said, “For every gun made is a loaf of bread out of a hungry kid's mouth”. President Joe Biden recently said, “We spent three hundred million dollars per day on the war in Afghanistan.” Why? Why can’t the Republicans come up with policies that support and entice people instead of coming up with stunts that prevent people from voting? We can never go back to the time when all rights were reserved for whites, and blacks and browns were to stand back as slaves or be Jim-crowed. One Freshman Congressman, Steven Cawthorn, recently implied he would go back to taking up arms against other Americans if they believed other than him. He said he would break people out of jail for participating in the Insurrection of January 6, 2021. Others have attacked the Senate in the stated Insurrection and threatened to kill the Speaker of the House and hang the United States Vice President. And we are not to teach about the history of race in America. Why? We are watching people planning for another Insurrection, including purchasing bulletproof vests. We can only guess what the Police would do if blacks were openly calling for violence against whites. Are we going backward and losing the rights gained over the years? What do we do about it? Do we defend ourselves? The Republicans have elevated a black man as their front runner in the California Governor Recall election. One newspaper called him, “the black face of white supremacy”. He comes on TV asking, does he look like a white supremacist? He’s right. He doesn’t look like a white supremacist. I won’t say what he looks like. But I invite you to guess what he looks and/or sounds like to you. The United States Supreme Court has made it nearly impossible for Roe v Wade to survive. I suggest that Black, Asian, and Brown folks begin to give birth to as many little ones as possible and contribute to a Black, Asian, and Brown majority in the future. In the meantime, while we figure out a way to fight, we fight in all the legal ways we can. In days past, we were slaves and we overcame that. We overcame Jim Crow and we can get past their latest efforts to return us to the past. In the past, we created Schools, Churches, Panthers, NAACP, Deacons of Defense, SCLC, Sororities, Fraternities, and Cultural Centers. What do we do now? Do we wait, or do we initiate a plan that keeps us moving forward? |
