Ted Douglas Bates 1936-2021 (84) Ted Douglas Bates was a loving father, grandfather, cousin, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2021 in Hospice Care in West Covina, California. He was born in Baytown, Texas. He was the first-born son of Nelson Bates and Mabel Renty. Ted had 4 siblings, The oldest sibling Donna Ruth Bates (dec'd), James Edward Bates was the middle sibling (lvg)., the youngest Joseph Milton Bates (dec'd) and Nelson Bates (half-brother)(lvg).
He attended Manual Arts High School where he played football and he was captain of the football team. He also was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Oregon State University where he earned his B.A. in Physical Therapy. He was first string All-American in Pro-Football. His position was linebacker, 1958; Ted Bates played Pro-Football for St. Louis Cardinals (Chicago Cardinals) for 4 seasons and 1963 New York Jets and Washington Redskins. In 1970, Ted worked for the City of Pasadena for over 30 years in charge of all Adult Recreation for all of the Pasadena Parks. He was instrumental in starting the Pasadena Black history Parade and the once Pasadena Jazz Fest. He was married to Vodie Ann Rhinehart (div. 1977) he is survived by son Leverette Ted Bates, and daughter Deandra Ruth Bates. He has 4 grandchildren Breanna Ann Bates-Rodriguez, David Naseby-Ted Bates, Destiny Rose Bates, Rosie Evelyn Bates, and Great Grandchildren Zenor Josefina Rodriguez, Georgina (GiGi) Maria Rodriguez. His legacy lives on.... He loved playing chess, fishing, tennis, golf, and dominoes (bones). He was very much loved by ALL and touched by many!!! He was a loving kind spirit who will be dearly missed. He always said he was "Blessed" all of his life and he was! Donations will be accepted in lieu of flowers for the for newcomers in AA to purchase AA materials and books.
