First Ladies Health Day

On Sunday, October 13, 2019, five local churches in the Pasadena/Altadena area participated in the First Ladies Health Day. They included First Lady Kimberly Calvert-Johnson of Calvary CME Church; First Lady Melinda Campbell of First AME Church, Pasadena; First Lady Trudell Skinner of Metropolitan Baptist Church; First Lady Ranza Garr Trotter of Morning Star Baptist Church, and First Lady Juanita Edwards of Pasadena Community Christian Fellowship.
The First Ladies of Los Angeles and surrounding areas joined with Walgreens and Healthcare Partners in this citywide First Ladies Health Day which included 18 churches. Each church hosted a Health Day to provide free preventable and life-saving health screenings including Diabetes, Glucose testing, Blood Pressure, Vision, Dental, Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, HIV/Aids, Hep C, Mental Illness and more.

First Lady Trudell Skinner of Metropolitan Baptist Church stated, “In addition to health screenings and resources provided, we had a mini health career fair for our youth group. Also working in the field, four awesome young adults: Sophia Welcome- RN and EMT; Lakeisha Jeanmarie - PHD student at UC Irvine, Public Health; Aunisha Bailey - Psychologist - Mental Health; and Nelson Meza - Department of Public Health - Mental Health participated along with Dr. Christopher Sistrunk, from City of Hope.
Dr. Christopher Sistrunk spoke to the adults about his cancer research at the City of Hope. It was awesome.
Various speakers were available to discuss child screenings and nutritional needs. Mrs. Julia Cooksey Evans was the guest speaker at FAME Pasadena Church. She delivered a reviting testimony of overcoming a series of lifethreatening mental challenges. Dr. Sistrunk visited more than one church to discuss share information on cancer and prevention.
