How will the Pasadena Police Oversight Commission Address Concerns of Our Community?
By Elise Preston Mallory

No Justice, No Peace!  The year 2020 was monumental in many ways.  Everything from the pandemic to Social Justice took center stage, and unfortunately Pasadena had its own George Floyd moment when Anthony McClain was shot in August by the Pasadena Police.

In the mist of all the marches, the Pasadena City Council voted to establish a Police Oversight Commission.  The City Council has released an Application to apply to be on the Police Oversight Commission where you can download the application at the cityofpasadena.net website.

After reviewing the application, there are many questions. In order for the community to get what we want and need from this commission that is being implemented, we need to push for answers.  We need this commission to be effective and to affect Police processes so the killing and shooting of people of color by the police decreases.  Bias on the police force must be changed and in order to achieve this objective, bias cannot exist within this Commission.

An example of some of the questions are: If someone has a police record, are they eligible to be on the Commission? What visibility will the Community have into the process? What is the selection criteria? If past law enforcement is allowed on the Commission, how many years will they need to have been retired from the police force before being eligible?  What is the desired ethnic make-up of the Commission?

Until the city answers these questions and others, we are encouraging on-going Public Comments.  The Pasadena City Council meets at 2 PM on Mondays.  Public Comments should be submitted by Sunday of each week at Public Comment - Office of the City Clerk (cityofpasadena.net) website.

In order to have a voice in what takes place in this critical project that significantly impacts Pasadena citizens of color, we need to speak up and be a part of the process!  Speak up, Be Heard! Don’t let our marching be in vain!
