Rose Princess States
Her Goals

By Jackson Q. Jones

The Tournament of Roses, Royal Court is chosen yearly, from young women in the Pasadena Area Community College District. The 2020 Royal Court was recently selected and consists of students from Arcadia High School to Marshall Fundamental.

I had the privilege of attending one of their community service appearances and speaking with the princess, Michael Yvonne Wilkins, about her term. My goal was to pick her brain and understand more of what she is like as a person, so with the opening question I asked,

“When did you realize that you wanted to be a part of the Royal Court?”

“I think I realized I wanted to be a part of it through watching every iteration, in all the years I went to the parade. So I’ve always looked up to them and was inspired by all the work they did. I knew from the start that I wanted to try out and hopefully attain a position.” With the next question, I asked,

“What are your plans in life; why are you on the earth right now?” She responded with, “Well, I enjoy community service and public speaking, so I would hope to become a lawyer. Either family law or entertainment law. I’d love to have a career that involves speaking and being a voice for people who don’t have one. So I feel this is the best building block I can receive to do what I want to do. I am honored to represent my family, my church- Scott United Methodist Church, my school - Maranatha School and my Community. I am more than blessed to have two parents who work diligently to make certain I receive the best home training, the best education, the best extracurricular activities and most of all, the best-sacred training. I also know that I am required to share my blessings with others and I know the joy that comes with service."

“Is UCLA the ‘Dena’s team?” she answered with,

“I can’t really say that because Oregon and Wisconsin are playing in this year’s Rose Bowl game, but I’m more of a USC girl.” To which I replied,

“We’ll see how the people feel about that.” I then asked her what she intends to do with her platform.

“I plan to get as many opportunities as I can for college and hopefully my career goals,” she said precisely.

“What colleges do you plan on applying to?” Princess Michael then said, “I’d like to go to any schools from California to the east coast. My top on the west coast being USC and Loyola Marymount University. The east coast being Howard and George Washington University as my top choices.”
